It took me a month and over $200 to figure out what LA Fitness is doing, but here's the skinny.

1) You sign up and allow the gym to bill your bank account for a specific amount on a specific day of the month. 2) The company debits your account early "by mistake" (or so they claim). 3) The debit bounces (because you didn't expect them to charge you early and you don't have enough $$$ in the account). 4) Instead of calling you to say what's up, LA Fitness bills you THREE more times. 5) Now you have at least $100 in NSF fees from your bank and LA Fitness won't do anything about their "mistake". 6) The entire process starts again the following month.

You've been warned.........

The specific issue I had was that I requested LA Fitness change my billing date from the 1st of the month to the around the 20th. They told me that the matter was taken care of, yet I was billed the first of the following month. That was no big deal because I had the cash in my account. I called back to verify it would taken out on the 20th of the following month and was assured it would be. Same story - it was taken out on the first again. But this time, I didn't have the money, hence the chain of NSF fees.

Had LA Fitness done either of the following I would still be a member: 1) apologize for their screw up, or 2) pay my NSF fees. Neither happened.

You've been warned (again)...........

LA Fitness does not bill before your billing date. The billing file is sent out to banking institutions a few days in advance to bill ONyour bill date, so you may show "pending" charges if you're viewing your banking online. If the first attempt to bill does not process, the BANK will attempt to re-run the payment, just as they would if you had written a check against your account. If possible, you should use a credit card instead of your bank routing and account numbers to prevent the bank from hitting you with tons of fees in the event your account is overdrawn.
